Bristol jazz for year’s end

Here’s the usual link to a comprehensive rundown of upcoming jazz delights – for those who find Bristol247’s site tricky to navigate. And this week it covers a longer spell, through the Xmas break. Add the excellent Bath jazz weekend (Jan 3-5) I mentioned last week, and you can plan your live music for the next little while in one go.

Meanwhile, congratulations to the Jazz Defenders for a packed-out album launch date at Future Inns last week. Don’t think I’ve ever seen so many people in the place. They play hard bop with unusual conviction and the results are hugely enjoyable. It was of course a mistake to check the exit poll between sets, but the resulting deep gloom wasn’t their fault. If any music could have dispelled the mood that immediately gripped me, and hasn’t really lifted yet to be honest, it would have been theirs. Going to have to keep taking the jazz medicine until it begins to have some effect again, I guess…
