Bristol jazz week – March 4

March 4, 2019

As we count down to the Bristol Jazz and Blues Festival, there’s already a feast of good music on offer in March. Tony Benjamin has details of the coming week’s delights, as usual. Out of the ordinary dates include the remarkable hybrid ensemble Laura Jurd has recruited for a short tour. He links that to International Women’s Day, and there’s another great (non jazz) gig marking that date on Wednesday, incidentally – also at St George’s. Coven were immensely enjoyable last year at the Folk House, and their elevation to St G’s means there are still a few tickets left this time round at the time of writing.

Also worth mentioning that Jurd’s crew move on to Cardiff on Friday if you’re otherwise engaged on Thursday (I am, unfortunately), when they appear at the RWCMD. There’s also a nice prospect across the Severn on Saturday night, when Huw Warren (soon to appear at St Georges with a crack ensemble for the jazz festival) plays a duo recital with guitarist John Parricelli at Cardiff University.

I’ll offer some recommendations for the jazz festival in a bit, but meantime here’s the general preview I wrote for LondonJazzNews – a great line up in just three weeks from now.
