Recent jazz highlights – January
I don’t put many reviews up here nowadays, but still like to archive impressions of things I once heard – so herewith a few links to coverage of recent gigs in and around Bristol. I’ve caught just three gigs this year so far, and all three were outstanding in their way.
First was Laura Jurd’s Human Spirit in Colston Hall foyer. Tony Benjamin’s review for Bristol 247 is here. I echo his comments about how nice the CD we both acquired on the night is, too.
Then came the rarity – Anthony Braxton‘s quartet at the Lantern – their only UK date. I wrote about that for LondonJazzNews here (great pic too). Other pieces, by Tony again and by Mike Collins here and here.
Third up were The Impossible Gentlemen at Wiltshire Music Centre – that’s me over at LondonJazzNews again.
That leaves a couple that got away – in an unusually rich week for Bristol jazz. Alex Garnett visited the Coronation Tap – see Tony Benjamin’s review here. And Mike Collins, who also enjoyed the Impossible Gentlemen, impressed by not only coming over to Bristol for Andy Sheppard‘s new band the following night but posting a review as well. He confirms it was a shame to miss it, dammit. Must look out for their next gig…
