Dave Liebman at St George’s: great expectations
There’s an enterprising booking at St George’s a week from today (Thursday 4th), when the US saxophone master Dave Liebman visits.
It’s enterprising two ways. St G’s have him for what I think is his only UK gig on this European trip. And he’s here with the intriguing Swiss piano trio Vein, who have a record of approaching top US soloists and working with them live and on record.
You may not have heard of them before (I hadn’t), but they have endorsements from lots of people of good taste. Also, and one reason for posting this a week ahead, a live Jazz on 3 set in London from a recent gig is available on iPlayer for another couple of weeks. That will tell you more, and features another US heavyweight, Greg Osby, who talks about how stimulating they are to play with. It’s impressive stuff, and well worth a listen.
They have been in the studio with Liebman, and this is the first of a bunch of European concert dates with the man. He’s best known for his stint with Miles Davis long ago, but has done many great things since. He is one of the most complete post-Coltrane saxophone players, and one of the most consistently creative. Having him visit the UK is an event, never mind having a chance to hear him live in Bristol. World class jazz in a world class venue to brighten up the dark days of early December. Booking here.
