Bristol jazz week, June 14

June 14, 2014

A trad band at The Canteen tomorrow, for a change – the Rhythm Pencils. More about them here.

Then two more good prospects at the same venue:

Lady Nade is joined by guitarist Seb Gutiez on Tuesday, while alto and baritonist Kevin Figes’ quartet appear on Wednesday. They also have a date earlier in the week in Bath, Monday night at The Bell. This is an excellent quartet with the great Bristol rhythm section of Jim Blomfield, Will Harris and Mark Whitlam, seen to such good effect with Andy Hague at the Fringe last week…

The excellent pianist (and jazz blogger and reviewer) Mike Collins is at Fringe Jazz in Clifton on Thursday, with saxophonist Lee Goodall making his trio up to a quartet. Try them, you’ll probably like what you hear.

The Bristol European Jazz Ensemble are at Future Inns, also on Thursday. The name comes from the origin of the now Bristol resident expatriate players –  Italy, France, Switzerland and Denmark – with Brit David Mowat leading on Trumpet along with Julien Alenda on Alto Sax, Anders Olinder – Keyboards, Pasquale Votino – Bass and Marco Anderson – Drums.

That’s all I know about over the next seven days, but get ready for Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Centre Orchestra at Colston Hall on June 26th, which is one not to miss.

(Venue links down the page; do put any omissions in the comments).

Yes, got confused about that as there’s an ad in Jazzwise says June 12 – I see it’s actually in July. Will post about it later.
