Coming up: Phil Robson organ trio

June 6, 2014

This Sunday’s Jazz at the Albert promotion at the Hen and Chicken should be a special one. Phil Robson is a superb guitarist in all settings, but seems to get extra inspiration when he plays with the drum dynamo Gene Calderazzo – they make up half of Partisans, whose reconvening after a break is one of the most welcome pieces of jazz news of 2014 (they played in Monmouth last week: damn). Calderazzo was in fine, driving form at Cheltenham last month in Partisans co-leader Julian Siegel’s quartet, and it’ll be great to see him in action again.

This gig, though, gives us Robson and Calderazzo as two thirds of Robson’s trio with Hammond organist Ross Stanley. They should offer a fresh take on the classic organ trio sound. The video sampler below is also on Ian Storror’s website but I’m posting it again here because it’s so good. Anticipation: high!
