Bristol jazz this week – Dec 8
A couple of standouts this week. I’m very selective about vocalists, but will be heading for St George’s to hear Liane Carroll on Thursday evening.
And a bit further afield, there’s a rare chance to hear the great Mike Westbrook’s big band in Exeter’s Barnfield Theatre the night before. They promise to include Christmas songs, but they’ll all be excellent if he’s arranged them. (When will someone bring this band to Bristol, I wonder?).
The John Pratt trio appear at the Canteen on Wednesday, and Future Inns is back to normal on Thursday, with another singer, Victorian Klewin, who I don’t know but has Greg Cordez on bass and Jim Blomfield on piano so must know what she’s about. Moscow Drug Club will also be at The Fringe in Clifton the same night.
And yet another vocalist, Zoe Gilby, has the early evening slot in Colston Hall’s foyer on Friday. Lets hope she fares better than Dominic Lash’s quartet this week, who came but could not perform because the hall neglected to provide a piano…
Greg Cordez again at the BeBop club on Friday, leading his quintet with Nick Malcolm and Jake McMurchie on horns, an excellent combination. (Very positive Tony Benjamin review of their last show still up here on the old Venue website.)
Finally, there’s high class organ trio music from Dan Moore, Matt Brown and Denny Ilett at the Coronation Tap next Sunday, Dec 15th, while Andy Sheppard and James Morton are not far away at the Alma Tavern.
BTW, Venue’s site, which I think is no longer being maintained, still lists a gig my Georgie Fame on Tuesday Dec 10th, but he’s unwell so it won’t be happening.
As ever, do rectify any omissions* in the comments.
*One I missed – a nice gig for Moonlight Saving Time for those who’d like a festive dinner with their music at Berwick Lodge, BS10 on Thursday.
