Coming up, John Etheridge, The Fringe, Thurs 7 Nov

November 4, 2013

SONY DSCPlenty going on this Thursday, as usual, with a big gig at St Georges for Darius Brubeck’s band playing some of his dad’s stuff, some of his own – and the regular sessions at Future Inns and the Fringe. The latter has come up with something special, though, a visit from John Etheridge, always a pleasure to hear in whichever of the many line-ups he appears with (I’ve enjoyed them all, though have a special soft spot for the Zappatistas).

Not them this time, but an organ trio which should afford plenty of scope to see the master guitarist in action up close, as only the Fringe can do. It’ll cost a bit more than is usual down there, but worth it to support the risk-taking of bringing an out of town star to such a small venue.

Details below

JOHN ETHERIDGE’S BLUE SPIRITS, Fringe Jazz, Thursday 7th November at 8PM – £15

John Etheridge – Guitar, Pete Whittaker – Hammond Organ and Mark Fletcher – Drums

To quote Pat Metheny “John Etheridge is one of the best guitarists in the world”.

Best known for playing with Soft Machine and Stephane Grappelli, Etheridge is making a very rare visit to Bristol and brings with him his superb London Trio. Drawing on a vast reservoir of musical experience spanning 43 years, Etheridge distills the bluesier side of his musical world in a repertoire that manifests intensity and emotion as it’s main quality, with subtlety, fluidity and interaction as central. Pete Whittaker is a brilliant accompanist and soloist and drummer Mark Fletcher is celebrated for his drive an invention. The repertoire is edgy and engaging with a forceful drive and bravura performances….Another unmissable night at Fringe Jazz.
