Coming up – jazz varieties
After the glories of David Murray at St George’s last week (a great review from Mike Collins here), there’s another busy musical week ahead. Paloma Faith and the Guy Barker concert orchestra are at Colston Hall tomorrow (Tues 22). Not one I’d normally show for, but an unexpected request to review it has got me a seat. It’s a sellout, but I’ll tell you about it afterwards.
Then off to Cardiff the following day for an unbeatable double bill of Zoe Rahman and Christine Tobin (PDF). Rahman is always worth hearing and having admired the CD, it will be a real treat to hear Tobin doing her Yeats settings live.
The Be-Bop club’s guiding hand Andy Hague brings his fine quintet to the club back in Bristol on Friday, but I have a prior engagement with the Mingus Big Band at Ronnie Scott’s. Yes, an extravagant birthday present, but cheaper than a trip to New York… There’s another fine gig in Cardiff on Saturday, when The Impossible Gentlemen finish their tour, but I think that might be a but much, alas…
