Coming up – Marius Neset and Daniel Herskedal, St George’s

September 13, 2012

Venues are waking up for the Autumn – with the Be-bop club back in action from this Friday, and Australian minimalist cleverness from The Necks at St George’s tonight (Sep 13).

That one was in the Autumn brochure, but there’s an extremely welcome addition which isn’t. The up and coming sax prodigy Marius Neset appears for free at St George’s next Monday at 8.00 in duo with tuba player Daniel Herskedal.

If that sounds a bit austere, a listen to their lush and beautiful new recording dispels any such suspicion. It is full of wonderful things – great playing, gorgeous tunes, often with a folk strain, and close interaction between the two players. The setting brings out a different side of Neset’s playing from the blazing virtuosity that dominates his earlier quartet release, and he blends superbly with Herskedal’s improbably fleet tuba.

Not convinced? Sample it here.

And as well as the praise clipped on the St George’s website there are other great reviews of the CD here, here, and here. Comparisons with Jan Garbarek and John Surman’s work are made, and deserved.

Did I mention it is free entry?

With Greg Osby and the supremely gifted pianist Fred Hersch making St George’s dates later in the year, Brandon Hill will be a great place for jazz this Autumn.
