A scintillating evening’s Schubert from Paul Lewis at St George’s last week – Martin kettle describes it well here, albeit from another venue a few days’ earlier – and nothing to add except that I don’t think I’ve ever seen the audience more vocal in their appreciation at the end of a classical recital there. It would be a stretch to suggest a man who performs continually round the world has a special relationship with the venue, but he certainly goes down well there.
And this week’s must see is at St George’s again. There’s plenty of good stuff around, but nothing to rival Phronesis, Jasper Hoiby’s always arresting trio. They are supporting Wayne Shorter’s Quartet at the Barbican on Saturday, so definitely moving up in the jazz world. Really looking forward to this one.
p.s wrote about their last appearance in Bristol, a year ago, here.
