Gig of the Week – James Morton

August 25, 2011

Back from a few days in Dublin (not much in the way of jazz on offer in August, but plenty of traditional stuff to enjoy), there is actually a choice of jazz in bristol to end the week, as we wait for big-time jazz to resume with Marius Neset at Colston Hall on Sep 4.

Martin Jenkins’ quartet Freight tonight (Thurs) at the Golden Lion are worth catching. But a sighting of James Morton last week, sitting in with the Andy Sheppard organ trio The Pushy Doctors at the Grain Barge, confirmed that his featured gig at our local on Gloucester Rd, The Prom, on Friday 26th is the one to make a point of hearing.

The Pushy Doctors, a superb trio who have confined themselves to Bristol and Bath so far, put on a supremely enjoyable show, stringing together tunes from All or Nothing at All to Wayne Shorter, Pink Floyd and, er, the Supremes (see what I did there?). The whole thing was in line with previous pub gigs this Summer as described here and Tony B does justice to this latest appearance here. It all felt more fun than anything at Brecon’s festival day the previous week. But the addition of Morton’s scorching alto to a couple of numbers raised them to a whole new level. It will be excellent to see him take the lead for a whole evening.
