Gig of the week – there is one
Having noted the lull in gigs, and it is hard to remember the last time I heard no live music for a whole month, there are suddenly (at least) three on the same night. Hope they all get an audience… see Venue’s handy listing for the full choice.
I’m torn between a pair of dates in Clifton. The Coronation Tap has the three-sax line-up of James Gardiner-Bateman, recent Kenny Wheeler prize winner Josh Arcoleo and Alex Garnett, with outstanding back up from Lewis Wright on vibes, Pete Randall on bass and everyone’s-drummer-if-they-can-get-him, James Maddren. Has to be good.
But then there’s also a great line up at the Beaufort Arms, described by the leader thus:
“the Mike Willox Quartet – featuring the impressively muscular violinist John Pearce – The excellent Emily Wright will be singing a few songs with us and, as there’s a tuned piano there, we’ll be playing acoustically.
Emily Wright – vocals
John Pearce – violin
Mike Willox – piano
Will Harris – bass
Scott Hammond – drums”
I keep hearing good things about Wright, and the chance to hear Mr W playing acoustically is appealing too – so having been so taken with John Pearce a few weeks ago I think this is, on balance, the one to go for. Pity it isn’t on Friday, though!
