Gig of the week – Andy Sheppard, Moscow Drug Club

June 21, 2011

Getting quieter on the jazz front for the Summer now, but this Saturday special at St George’s looks good. Heard quite a lot from Mr Sheppard this year, but all good – and good to see him bringing his new project before a local audience. And it’s only a tenner if you call or visit the box office, so don’t book online…   0845 40 24 001.

Here’s what the venue say:

Saturday 25 June 8pm
MIDSUMMER MUSIC FESTIVAL
Andy Sheppard vs
Moscow Drug Club
A midsummer mix-up double-bill with St George’s artist in residence Andy Sheppard opening proceedings with a debut outing for his new solo show: a beautiful, ambiently-inclined suite for saxophones, electronics and natural sounds.

Following this relaxed, chill-enhancing first set and a refreshing interval, Bristol’s favourite Hot Club and Gypsy Jazz-style cabaret string band entertain us with their fabulous take on Jacques Brel, Duke Ellington, Leonard Cohen, Edith Piaf, and the rest.

‘Romanticism, carefully managed anarchy and accessibly subtle, elegant jazz.’ The Guardian on Andy Sheppard

‘Like an old Eastern European bar where Django Reinhardt and Tom Waits are having an afterhours jam with the local Tziganes.’ Le Quecum Bar London on Moscow Drug Club
