Nils Petter Molvaer – St George’s, Feb 18

February 19, 2010

Tempted to let ths one pass, but just for the record…

Didn’t know the man’s work, so went along because of high critical reputation. Result? Disappointment. Current stuff, with a trio of guitar, drums and Molvaer’s heavily processed trumpet, is a kind of, I dunno, Nordic sound poetry/late Miles hybrid, I suppose.

Skillful, I guess. Atmospheric, certainly. But interesting? Not very.

Stuck it out to the end of the uninterrupted 90 minute set to see if there was any further development after the basic repertoire of effects had been laid out (that trumpet, singing into the trumpet mike, bringing in beats, increasing the volume and pace a bit, then taking it down again). There wasn’t. The whole thing left little impression beyond a certain dogged continuity. Really quite dull, to my ears.
